CHAPTER 6. ELECTIONSCHAPTER 6. ELECTIONS\Article 1. Governing Body

The non-partisan election of city officials shall be conducted in all respects as provided by the laws of Kansas governing the holding of city elections.

At all city elections the polls shall be open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m., unless different hours are set and publicly announced by the county election officer.

(a)   General elections shall take place on the Tuesday succeeding the first Monday of November, beginning in November 2017. The governing body positions, whose terms expire in January 2018, shall be elected at the election in November 2017, and the remaining three governing body positions shall be elected at the succeeding election. Thereafter, succeeding elections will be held every year for all such governing body positions whose terms have expired.

(b)   Following the transition of the governing body’s terms to the new election cycle as set forth herein, the mayor and all council members shall hold their respective offices for two years and until their successors are elected and qualified.

(a)   The term of office for newly elected city officials shall commence with and include the first regular meeting in January following certification of the election by the county election officer.

(b)   Every person elected or appointed to city office, before entering upon the duties of such office, shall take and subscribe an oath or affirmation as specified in K.S.A. 54-106, and amendments thereto, and every such oath or affirmation shall be filed with the city clerk.

In accordance with K.S.A. 25-205, and amendments thereto, any person may become a candidate for city office elected at large by having had filed on their behalf, a nomination petition or a declaration of candidacy, accompanied by any fee required by law. The nomination petition must be signed by 2% of the qualified electors of the City of Lecompton.
